The Benefits of Sea Kelp – A Solution for Acne Sufferers

Acne can hit you at almost any time in your life from teenage years through to your older more mature years. Unfortunately acne holds no bounds.

Suffering from the effects of acne in your teenage years can be extremely difficult but when it appears later on in life then things can become somewhat embarrassing, as many people think “this shouldn’t be happening to me at this age”.

Perhaps you are now suffering from acne and need to find a solution to help control it. Have you tried skincare products containing sea kelp?

Kelp extract, also known as Durvillaea potatorum (kelp) aqueous extractis and often referred to as sea kelp or seaweed is an effective ingredient in dealing with acne.

It is perfect for people with oily or combination skin types. Why? It moisturises without supplying extra oil. Yes the challenge combination skin or acne sufferers often face is that they have oil on the one hand, and yet at the same time also have dry patches.

Sea kelp is firming, healing and soothing for any skin type and is incredibly effective for normal and dry skin, as it is a powerful and nutritious moisturiser. That’s why it is great for combination skin types.

For thousands of years herbalists have used sea kelp to treat an array of problems. Kelp is rich in many minerals and active ingredients, moisturizing your skin and providing nutrients at the same time. It contains over 60 vitamins and minerals which are needed by your body to help it function well. And, it contains high levels of Iodine which support your thyroid naturally. Why is that important? The thyroid gland controls our metabolism, which can help keep your weight in check, while boosting your energy levels too.

Sea kelp can help regulate the oil production of your skin, remove bacteria and reduce redness with the help of its anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains elements that help remove toxins and can easily penetrate the skin for instant hydration and helping to keep your skin smooth.

It can be used as a natural exfoliator, helping to remove dead skin cells, which can cause blocked pores and further acne breakouts.

Research has also shown that kelp extract, can help prevent wrinkles with its rich moisturizing advantage. Kelp can also help prevent the breakdown of elastin and collagen, promoting a youthful appearance.

Integrity Cosmetics certified organic skincare products containing kelp include;

·         Protecting Moisturiser – for all skin types

·         Nourishing Moisturiser – for Combination/acne prone skin

·         Rejuvenating Moisturiser – for dry/mature skin

Seabuckthorn - For Soft, Supple Skin

Seabuckthorn is a superfruit that grows in rich, fertile Tibetan soil, 3800 meters above sea level. A vegetarian source of essential fatty acids 3, 6, 7, and 9 as well as powerful antioxidants Vitamins A, B1, B2, Folic Acid, C, D, E, K, and P. The vitamin C level is 10 times higher than that of oranges. The oils are cold pressed naturally nd comes in oil and capsule form.

Also known as Hippophae Rhamnoides, seabuckthorn is a source of herbal medicines, vitamins and nutrients. It is also used as active ingredient in anti-aging and medicinal skin care products given it’s nourishing revitalizing, and restorative action.

One of the main Seabuckthron products - Seabuckthorn oil is traditionally utilized to promote the healing the skin of burns, sores, wounds, eczema and helps improve conditions of mucous membranes, including ulcers, lesions and erosions.

Due to the high content of nutrients essential for the metabolism of skin cells, Seabuckthorn oil is applied to combat wrinkles, dryness and other symptoms of malnourished or prematurely aging skin.

Seabuckthorn in skincare products provides replenishing, intensive care for dry skin, keeping it soft, supple and smooth. Seabuckthorn berries are scientifically reputed to have a super-rich cocktail of antioxidant vitamins, flavonoids and essential fatty acids, helping to protect against free-radical damage that is associated with the signs of ageing.

Due to its unique botanical and nutritional properties, and there being no reported evidence of seabuckthorn oil causing adverse reactions or negative side effects, the oil is also used as a natural agent that may benefit diseases of mucous membranes including aphthous ulcers, esophagitis, acid reflux, and peptic ulcers, as well as dermatological diseases and skin conditions.

Juice from the seabuckthorn berries contains among the highest amounts of betacarotene and vitamins C and E of any fruit or vegetable.

In Mongolia, Russia and China, pulp oil may also be used topically to treat skin burns from radiation. Currently, cosmetic companies are adding seabuckthorn oil to anti-aging preparations.

Integrity Cosmetics skincare products containing certified organic seabuckthorn berry oil include:

• Rejuvenating Moisturiser – apply in the morning, for dry/aging skin types

Choose Cruelty Free Goes Global!

Choose Cruelty Free (CCF - no testing on animals) goes global! Yay – at last, now there’s a campaign to end animal testing of cosmetics formulations. And needless to say the individual ingredients used in producing cosmetics. Humane Society International (HSI) have just launched a campaign aimed at obtaining legislation in every country to ban cruel testing on animals in the cosmetics industry.

Animal testing of cosmetics is banned in the European Union (EU) however in Australia we don’t have federal legislation to stop animal testing of cosmetics. While we have some regulations in place, most of the big cosmetics brands that fill the shelves of department stores are largely imported and unregulated regarding animal testing.

Many governments are dragging their heels with legislation to ensure non-animal safety tests replace the use of animals. Why? It’s a tough one for governments. Large cosmetics companies wield a lot of power because they employ lots of people and pay lots of company tax, two things critical to any and every government’s success. Unfortunately the cosmetics companies impacted by such legislation aren’t keen to have their plans for current product distribution and future product development interfered with by new legislation.

And because most large companies are driven by profit they don’t want their product distribution or product development plans impacted. That’s someone’s bonus on the line, or more to the point, several people’s bonuses on the line. In a recent article published by Choose Cruelty Free they even go so far as to say “the majority of large companies are driven by profit, so much so they may forget to tell the truth”!!!!!

Since when has generating a profit and telling the truth about business operations been bound together? You tell the truth about what you do and you make the profits you make….don’t you? Apparently not! The article goes on to say that companies such as Avon, Estee Lauder and Mary Kay who have promoted their products as not being tested on animals to boost sales in countries like Australia have recently been “outed” as they were paying for Draize eye and skin tests to be done in Chinese government laboratories, as required by the country’s State Food and Drug Administration, to cash in on the $15 million Chinese cosmetics market.

What a shame, particularly when there are non animal testing alternatives that have been developed and accepted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operations and Development (OECD). So why do companies and governments still insist on using animal testing and not legislating against animal testing? Melbourne - Mind Body Spirit Festival Wash Up

Integrity Cosmetics range of Certified Organic Skin Care products were featured at the Mind, Body, Spirit Festival in Melbourne from June 8-11 at the Melbourne Convention Centre. What a jam packed 4 days! Our wonderful team talked to hoards of people, answering their questions about skin care and their skin type, their key challenges and what they look for in a natural skin care product. Cleansers, moisturizers and serum tubes were flowing onto hands thick and fast as people smelt and felt these gorgeous products. People tried guessing which ingredient it was that stood out for them, that scent….most people couldn’t quite put their finger on it, but knew they had smelt it somewhere before.

The Prize Draw attracted lots of people and the lucky winners are already starting to cash in on their prize. It was a learning curve, given it’s the first Mind Body Spirit Festival we’ve done and was loads of fun too. Luckily I grabbed a few minutes to check out the other stands and do a quick recky. Thank goodness I found the Conscious Chocolate stand, of which of course I had to make a purchase. I’d never tried it before and was curious. If you haven’t tried this delicacy, then it’s something you must do. One piece of this gorgeous chocolate and you’re senses will be taken away, as if by angels. It simply melts in your mouth! And being certified organic by the ACO, as our skin care range is, we have much in common!

I was fortunate enough to meet the chocolate maker himself – Pana Barbounis, while stuffing some orange flavored raw, organic chocolate into my mouth. One lip wavering at the melt in the mouth sensation that this taste test provides, I managed to get Pana’s card and said “we’re certified organic with the ACO too, we must talk” before I melted on the spot. There’s something very special about their handmade chocolate, with all natural ingredients. To order online or find your nearest stockist go to www.consciouschocolate.com.au

Thank goodness my wonderful team also got to try Conscious Chocolate’s wares and the sustenance was appreciated. Danica, Chantelle & Tathra took great care of the people who came by to have a look at Integrity Cosmetics and experience our ‘to die for’ natural skincare. We’ve even received emails from new customers to thank us for the service provided on the stand and commend us on how genuine we are. And of course lots of people walked away with very soft hands afterwards.

While I didn’t get to see or experience as much as I would like, going between breast feeding 7 month old Benjamin and being on the stand my schedule was jam packed. However I got a passing glance at The Australian School of Meditation, The Australian Shiatsu College, Conscious Chocolate, Sophisticakes (cup cake stand), WellBeing Magazine, Living Now Magazine, Australian Natural Health, Golden Circle, The Chemcial Maze and even got to have a chat with the author Bill Statham himself. Thanks for dropping in to say hi Bill!

Now the event organizers are busy preparing for the Brisbane show. I must say I’m glad to have a break, but if you’re in Brissy this weekend, and are thinking of checking it out, see their website for more info www.mbsfestival.com.au

Yummy Chemical – Green Tea Extract

What is it?

Generated from green tea leaves, this herbal extract is well known for it’s health benefits, but what about it’s benefits to healthy skin? Known to restore the natural beauty of your skin and for it’s anti aging benefits. When checking the ingredients of products, ensure that they don’t contain green tea fragrance, as fragrance oils are synthetic and don’t contain the same properties as herbal extracts.

Where is it found?

Some skin care products contain minimal quantities of green tea extract, so the anti aging benefit can be questioned. However Integrity Cosmetics products contain high levels of green tea extract, shown in the first few ingredients. For example, check out the ingredients in the rejuvenating moisturiser

Tips for Acne Management

Acne has to be one of the highest priorities to deal with when people are asked about their skin care challenges. One myth held by many people dealing with acne is that the number one priority to clear and radiant skin is to reduce the oil that their skin produces. In actual fact the natural oils our skin produces play an important role in protecting our skin and are just that – natural.

If you have acne it is advisable to be gentle with your skin care and beauty regime and to use natural products so as not to aggravate your skin and the acne any further. Harsh cleansing, scrubbing or exfoliating should be avoided as should the over use of cosmetics and the use of incorrect products. So what’s an incorrect product?

Funnily enough many of us love the feel of squeaky clean skin, however this can be counter productive as this end result often due to stripping your skin of it’s natural goodness which can aggravate it too. Harsh cleansers and soaps can strip your skin of it’s natural and protective oils. For example SLS also known as sodium lauryl sulphate contained in most cleansers, to create a foaming effect is harsh and may have your skin feeling squeaky clean, but is likely to irritate acne prone skin and is best avoided.

Instead try a pure and natural, certified organic cleanser such as the Integrity Cosmetics Nourishing Cleanser or Purifying Cleanser which provides an ever so gentle exfoliation at the same time as cleansing your skin. For more information see our organic cleanser

Yummy & Yucky Chemical

Yucky Chemical - TEA - Stearate

What is it?

An emulsifier or cleanser which may be genetically modified, animal derived and petroleum derived.

Concentration limits based on the amount of Triethanolamine in the product were set for products intended to be left on the skin by the CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review Board of America)

Where is it found?

Used in a variety of baby, bath, eye makeup, fragrance, hair, makeup, nail, personal cleanliness, shaving, skin and suntan preparations, moisturisers and mascaras.

Yummy Chemical – Guar Gum

What is it?

Guar Gum is a thickener, or binding agent. As it has almost eight times the water-thickening potency of cornstarch it is an economical ingredient to use in production processes.

Where is it found?

Created from the guar seeds, or the guar bean. The guar seeds are dehusked, milled and screened to obtain the guar gum. It is typically produced as a free-flowing, off-white-colored, ground powder used in food preparation, cosmetics, moisturisers, personal care products, beauty products and for example the Integrity Cosmetics Nourishing Moisturiser

Instantly Identify Dangerous Food Additives Or Cosmetics Ingredients With Ease

Not sure what the long unfamiliar chemicals on the back of your personal care products are? Then look it up in The Chemical Maze. Not all long and unfamiliar chemicals are nasty but many of them sure are and it's best to check before purchasing or using them on your precious skin. The Chemical Maze is pocket size so you can carry it in your bag and check ingredients on the back of the pack while you're in a store, or even online, before you purchase. Don't make the mistake many people do and purchase only then to find out that despite the appearance, the product contains ingredients that’ aren’t so natural and healthy and that you may not be happy for you and your family to use.

I’ve made this error many times in the past myself and it certainly is a waste of time and energy. In fact that’s why I created Integrity Cosmetics, a line of certified organic skin care and beauty products that you can trust. When you use Integrity Cosmetics, you know that you’re using high quality, pure and natural products. In fact there’s no need to even look the ingredients up in The Chemical Maze – but you’re welcome to check, and we encourage you to for your own peace of mind. We also know how time consuming this is, and the reality, in our time poor lives, is that most people won’t get around to it. So with Integrity at least you know you can count on us to provide a truly pure and natural product.

The Chemical Maze is incredibly informative, including chemical definitions for ingredients used in food, personal care, beauty, cosmetics and skin care products. Use it to distinguish what's what in the world of chemicals and whether you want to keep using the products you have assumed are healthy for you in the past, or adopt a certified organic lifestyle.

Coffee Lovers Go Green

More and more coffee lovers are going green! And I don’t mean converting to Green Tea, although this could be a better health option for those addicted to way too many cups of coffee each day (you know who you are....lol) And I’m not talking about an organic coffee option either - I know usually I would!

I am referring to the increasing number of coffee lovers who are doing their bit for the environment, taking up the very popular and environmentally friendly option of reusing coffee cups versus using throw away coffee cups.

Women in particular are good at handing things on, and reusing products in daily life, whether it’s the kids clothes and toys that are handed on to friends or even the Opp Shop when they’ve been outgrown, or a few extra pregnancy clothing options loaned to a girlfriend in need, just when she could really do with a wardrobe pick me up (the finances like this one too).

Our habit of using disposable coffee cups when we purchase take away coffee is costing our environment, given disposable cups are not recyclable and the volume of take away coffee consumed around the world. I’m sure many of you didn’t even think that your morning coffee habit was contributing to increased landfill, despite how much other recycling we may do. The truth is that disposable coffee cups often get placed in the recycling bin, understandably given their paper and plastic content, but the bad news is that a used paper cup is not recyclable and can take over 50 years to break down in landfill.

KeepCup, founded by brother and sister Abigail Forsyth and Jamie Forsyth, is taking the world by storm with their reusable cups which are barista standard, have a stylish design and the ability to make your own colour selection thereby designing your own cup – now that’s pretty funky. Just in case you’re thinking, but these cups are made from plastic – how good can that be for the environment? If you’d like more info on the positive environmental impact of using a reusable cup versus a disposable cup, check it out www.keepcup.com

Now this wouldn’t be an Integrity Cosmetics blog if I didn’t at least mention that using a reusable cup, doesn’t mean you have to drink coffee. In fact you could go the option of ordering a Chai, a green tea or a range of other herbal teas available, and depending on your choice of cafe, you might even find some caffeine free or organic tea options. Either way, using a reusable cup is a simple and easy way you can do something small to help our environment and reduce landfill by investing in a reusable cup.

Are Food Additives Robbing Us Of Healthy Glowing Skin?

Do you experience adverse skin reactions and you can’t work out why? Perhaps you’ve tried changing your skin care products and your beauty regime. You may have tried wearing less make up, being more diligent about cleansing and exfoliating, or even drinking more water. Surely these are all good things for our skin! Yes they are, and the issue may have something to do with the additives in the food we consume. A skin reaction may not be limited to the face, impacting other parts of your body too.

Did you know that many food additives can lead to adverse skin reactions? While we’ve all heard you are what you eat, I’m guessing that most people probably don’t realise the detrimental impact that food additives can have on us achieving natural, healthy, glowing skin – which we’d all love! You may have even had your skin reaction diagnosed as eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis. Having it labeled, doesn’t necessarily solve the problem and as I’ve experienced first hand, sometimes your skin problem isn’t diagnosed.

Perhaps this is a 21st century issue, given the amount of processed food we eat today? The food we consume today from supermarket shelves has a wide variety of new additives/chemicals/artificial ingredients which didn’t exist 50+ years ago. Most processed foods contain additives that didn’t exist 50 years ago, even the ones we think are actually normal and considered by the average person as healthy!

Are we simply unaware walking zombies who consume whatever the supermarket shelves stock, and what jumps out at us due to great packaging and constant TV advertising, regardless of the impact on our health today? We naively think that food producers have our health and our best interests at heart.

A few examples of food that many of us think are healthy enough, and are even included in diets designed by dieticians, but actually contain flavor enhancers which are known to cause skin reactions include:

  • Chicken salted chips
  • Flavored crackers
  • Sauces
  • Traditional Chinese

These foods contain flavor enhancers such as 620-635, 621 – Monosodium glutamate, otherwise known as MSG.

Food additive 635 also found in party pies and canned soups is prohibited in food for infants and is banned in some countries.

Food additive 621 can also be found in gelatin, yeast extract, soy sauce and over 10,000 foods containing malt extract, is also prohibited in food for infants and may be genetically modified. See For more detail see The Chemical Maze

There are many factors at play, and “healthy food” is a debatable topic with differences of opinion between experts such as dieticians and naturopaths, due to the context and focus of the training. Naturopaths and dieticians certainly have their place and role to play. I have however had dieticians recommend all the above foods quite happily, whereas I haven’t had a naturopath recommend any of these options for a healthy diet and optimum health outcomes.

Cosmetics Fall Short on Natural Claims

Cosmetics Design-Europe’s reporter Simon Pitman recently wrote an article on the research findings regarding Natural and Organic Personal Care Products. http://www.cosmeticsdesign-europe.com/Market-Trends/Research-finds-cosmetics-falling-short-on-natural-claims?nocount

One would presume Personal Care products to include a range of cosmetics, skin care and beauty products across the broad spectrum of what is known as Personal Care Products.

Pitmans article, backed up by research conducted by Organic Monitor, appears to be on the same page as recent comments in a recent Integrity Cosmetics Blog article. It appears that the formal research conducted concurs with; many cosmetics brands and companies evaluated falling very short on the “natural” and “organic” claims, and that Certified Organic products ranked the highest in actually being pure and natural and what they say they are.

It makes sense, that products which are certified organic, actually are what they say they are, given every certified organic ingredient has it’s own certificate of authenticity and that this is audited by an external body to the company producing and selling the product at the end of the day. Compare this process and audit trail to products which are not certified by any independent body or organization external to the company producing the products and or making natural and or organic claims.

The loop whole for producers of so called natural skin care and cosmetics products seems to be largely associated with; if you’re not calling it certified organic basically you don’t have anyone to answer to regarding your products’ organic or natural status.

Similar to the Integrity Cosmetics Blog, Pitmans’ article mentions two additional categories not previously mentioned including “naturally inspired” and “conventional” cosmetics. The Naturally inspired cosmetic products, which many brands claim to be, rank slightly higher on the scale than conventional cosmetics which are ranked last, with a score of 1 our of 10, even though they contain some form of natural or organic ingredients. It just goes to show how much variance there is on the scale of natural and organic cosmetics and skin care products.

With the rising demand for natural and organic beauty products and personal care products most traditional cosmetics companies are wanting to get a slice of the natural and organic cosmetics market, even if their products are so called “naturally inspired” or even “conventional”. Conventional cosmetics of course include your typical synthetic ingredients for example synthetic vitamin A, and petrochemical ingredients. Most consumers won’t be able to distinguish petrochemical ingredients over natural ingredients, except for perhaps being a little suspicious about some ingredients that sound a little scary or unfamiliar. This alone doesn’t mean that an ingredient actually is nasty, which is where a chemistry degree comes in very handy. It’s just a shame most of us can’t interpret the chemical names on labels and need to resort to a chemical dictionary, if you’re interested in knowing more. (link to The Chemical Maze in the shopping cart).

The ingredients which are synthetically produced, don’t have to be disclosed as such on the ingredients list. Vitamin A is a great example. I’ve heard statistics regarding the number of cosmetics producers who purchase synthetically produced vitamin A and it’s quite alarming. Unfortunately it seems most organizations would prefer to use the cheaper synthetic version due to the massive cost savings versus a natural or organic source of vitamin A.

7 Beauty Tips For sensitive skin:

  • Avoid cedar wood as this ingredient, all be it naturally derived, can cause skin irritation
  • Don’t use pre purchased face cloths/wipes as these contain chemicals and artificial preservatives that can irritate sensitive skin types
  • Avoid coriander oil this can cause contact dermatitis
  • Splash your face with water before and after cleansing and use a face cloth with luke warm water (not hot!)
  • Avoid artificial fragrances. Not to be confused with natural fragrances – some of which can actually be healing!
  • Select a certified organic face cleanser
  • Be gentle with your skin – don’t rub and scrub vigorously, this can increase the sensitivity

Products for Sensitive Skin Types – Are They Really?

If you have sensitive skin you’ll know that there are lots of products on the market especially designed for sensitive skin. Great!......But are they really? Even though the product name includes “Sensitive” are these products really formulated and designed for sensitive skin? They are certainly marketed to people with sensitive skin so you would expect that they are carefully designed to overcome the issues of sensitive skin wouldn’t you?

Sensitive Skin Face Cleansing Bar, or Sensitive Skin Face Wash, or Sensitive Skin Toner etc etc etc are examples of products which are advertised and marketed as being specifically formulated for sensitive skin. However in this day and age, surprise, surprise you still need to do your own research, because very often many of these products are actually counter productive for people with sensitive skin.

Have you fallen into the trap of using products for sensitive skin, only to find that they’re actually contributing to the problem? So why would this be the case?

Some sensitive skin products which you may think are natural contain ingredients which can actually cause sensitivity. Not with standing that if you’re allergic to a particular ingredient, even if it is a natural ingredient, there’s not a lot you can do except avoid that ingredient entirely and if you don’t, you can expect your skin to react.

If you have sensitive skin avoid using soap bars to clean your face. Even though such products usually say they are moisturizing, unfortunately they still dry your skin or increase the dryness of your skin as they contain cleansing detergents. A soap bar will also leave an unwanted residue on your skin, which contains unnatural ingredients, making it all the more difficult for any moisturizer or serum you use to actually be effective. Even a natural skin care product which is designed to moisturize will not be as effective when applied after using a soap bar cleanser.

Yummy & Yucky Chemicals

Hydroquinone

What is it?

An aromatic organic compound, is a type of phenol which is petroleum based, and is restricted in cosmetics in Canada. It’s function is stabalising. Where is it found?

It is used in cosmetics as a whitening agent for skin, is found in moisturisers, anti aging products, paint, super glue and is a major component in most photographic developers for film and paper.

Yummy Chemical:

Certified Organic Neroli extract

Botanical Name: Citrus aurantium bigarade

What is it?

A natural plant extract, Neroli essential oil soothes and calms the senses. Despite it’s nature, this essential oil regulates skin oiliness and minimizes enlarged pores. It is used to regenerate skin cells and to tone mature, dry, and sensitive skin.

Where is it found?

It is extracted from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, also known as orange blossom, a plant that originated from China. It was named after Princess Nerola from Italy who wore the scent for it’s sweet smelling aroma. The Certified Organic extract is created from trees grown with certified organic certification and the extraction procedure to generate the extract from the flower is free of toxic chemicals.

Protect your Skin from the Elements of the Weather All Year Round

Protect your Skin from the Elements of the Weather All Year Round

We often forget to protect our faces and our skin from the elements of the weather in the colder months, because we’re inside more and we cover up more. However the harsh wind can play havock with our complexion, given the delicate skin on our faces. Remember the early months of winter or when seasons change and that chapped lip experience? Well there is another option to protect your skin and battle the elements of the weather, hail, rain or shine.

The Integrity Cosmetics Protecting Moisturiser (link to product in shopping cart) contains zinc oxide which provides a protective layer for your skin, between you and the elements. While it has gorgeous nourishing and rejuvenating ingredients such as neroli, kelp, aloe vera, green tea, chamomile and calendula, just to mention a few, (certified organic of course) the zinc oxide provides a protective barrier against wind and sun which your lips and your face will love. Worn during the day, this natural moisturizer is suitable to be worn underneath make up or simply on it’s own. Apply to clean skin and ensure you cleanse thoroughly at night to remove the protective layer and the dirt which builds up during the day.

Apply the Rejuvenating Serum to face and neck at night, after cleansing, to give your skin the best chance of recuperating while you rest. Apply to clean skin after cleansing and of course remember to drink enough water in winter, often something we forget to do.

Tracey’s Sweat Tips for Busy People:

“Choose” something you’re going to do and schedule time to do it, even if it’s only 15 minutes. You’ll feel so much better when you actually follow through on your plan. Not only is it satisfying emotionally but physically too. Obviously seek medical advice if you have any health issues or injuries you’re dealing with before embarking on a new exercise regime.

The biggest obstacle for busy people is often finding the time to exercise, so choose 1 activity and commit to it on a regular basis. You don’t need a complex list of activities to choose from, keep your exercise regime simple at the start, then when you’re actually making the time to sweat you can branch out and add variety to your health regime.

  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is another good way to get started, and something you can do on a regular basis if you live or work in a building with stairs. Just allow a few more minutes to get from A to B….although you may find you’re simply using your usual elevator waiting time to walk!
  • Parking your car further away from where you’re going so that you walk there and back can add 15 plus minutes to your daily movement routine without having to find a huge block of time to get moving.
  • A brisk walk uphill for 15 minutes will get your heart rate going, walk for longer if you have time and as you build up your fitness, or simply walk until you’re sweating
  • Grab a skipping rope and skip, taking time out to rest in between stints. You might do 100 skips and rest for 20 seconds and repeat. Create a routine that works for you and has you sweat

Natural Beauty Tip for Healthy Glowing Skin this Winter

We all know that exercise is good for us, but in winter it can be more difficult to leave the hot chocolate and the couch behind and get moving. Exercise is good for flushing toxins and waste products from our body as it causes us to perspire. You see perspiration contains lyzosynme which fights bacteria and flushes microbes from the surface of our skin. Perspiration, although not always pretty, assists us in having gorgeous, healthy glowing skin naturally.

No time for exercise? Then check out some of our time saving suggestions for exercise ideas!

If you’re on Face Book, do let us know what exercise you’re doing this week, or simply comment in the Blog section of our website to share your winter exercise ideas with our readers.

Fresh Certified Organic Skin Care has arrived!

Our fresh Certified Organic skin care products have arrived. Our cleansers, exfoliant, moisturizers, skin protection moisturizer and anti aging serum have a life of 18 months from production and are good to use for 3+ months after opening (often more, especially when stored in the fridge).

One of the reasons our products are packaged the way they are is due to the 18 month best before date time frame. Why are Integrity Cosmetics products best before 18 months and not longer? Our gorgeous certified organic skin care products contain only the highest quality, pure and natural ingredients. Let us explain a little more: Because our products don’t contain synthetics, just natural ingredients, these ingredients when mixed together to create our formulations (unique to Integrity Cosmetics) are fragile, unlike most synthetic and petrochemical based products.

There are no petrochemical based preservatives used to make our products last longer – after all you don’t really want those ingredients in your natural skin care, even if they do last longer. Just think about it, would you want to eat fresh fruit and vegetables, or fruit and vegetables that have been chemically treated to have them last longer than they normally would?

Kookaburra

The “Kookaburra” is a versatile piece which can be worn as a necklace, bracelet or even a belt. With varying neck lengths you can wear it short, choker or long style. It comes with a gorgeous pair of earings which can be worn with the lariat, or separately.

You will win this designer piece of jewellery, simply by being the first person to purchase and spend $100 or more on the Integrity Cosmetics website, using the coupon code CLEARANCE.

Yummy Banana Smoothie Recipe | Integrity Cosmetics

Tracey’s very own banana smoothie recipe: A healthy snack, breakfast alternative, or simply to keep you going between meals. Great for overall health and contributes to glowing skin.

Pour 400 ml of room temperature filtered water into a blender

Why room temperature? Particularly in the colder weather and all year round for some body types, room temperature liquid in your smoothie makes it easier to digest, gentler on your system and doesn’t cool your body as refrigerated liquid will, helping you to retain heat.

Add 1 roughly chopped banana

3-4 teaspoons of organic natural yoghurt

1 teaspoon of LSA (linseed, almond, sunflower mix) is high in anti oxidants and is a good source of Omega 3 and Omega 6. These essential fatty acids are terrific for generating healthy skin. LSA is also an anti aging mixture.

1 teaspoon of organic honey

1 teaspoon of organic essential greens powder – gluten free and suitable for vegans, gives your greens intake a boost for the day. Chlorella and Spirulina based, this green powder is packed with vitamins and minerals. The powder is a good alternative if you don’t have a few handfuls of fresh spinach leaves on hand!

Whiz in the blender until smooth.

Water can be substituted for milk, rice milk, soy milk, almond milk, oat milk for a slightly thicker and heavier texture. This banana smoothie wacks a punch and is a nutritious snack that will keep your calories down and your fat intake if you’re watching your waistline!

Is your Skin care Active?

Did you know that if a product in contains 1% natural ingredients and 99% petrochemical/other non natural ingredients it can be called a natural product in Australia.

Something that makes natural ingredients desirable is that they are “active”, meaning they

stimulate cellular activity or has a specific function which is beneficial to the skin. Nourishing, rejuvenating, softening, bonding, hydrating are some examples of a few key benefits of active ingredients. Therefore non active ingredients do not produce the benefits of active ingredients.

Also called "performance" ingredients, these are the ingredients that cause physical changes in the skin, and can alter the appearance of the skin.

Natural Skin care products founds in Pharmacies contain on average 2-4% active ingredients

Products found in department stores on average contain 3-8% active ingredients

Professional skin care ranges on average contain 4-24% active ingredients

The Integrity skin care range contains 95% and 100% active ingredients. That’s got to be a good thing when it comes to using a skin care system which is natural and effective.

Most organic skin care ranges are designed with a few active ingredients added, for example 2% active ingredients, versus containing 95-100% active Integrity skin care products

ORGANIC BEAUTY

You may already eat organic food, in which case you already know it’s is a no brainer in terms of being better for your health and the environment being produced without pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, plus organic food tastes a whole lot better too!

But why use organic beauty products?

Well the alternatives aren’t so great when you look below the surface. Unfortunately most products with any pure and natural ingredients also contain less desirable ingredients, including:

  • Distearyldimonium chloride, known to be toxic depending on dose and conentration
  • Isopropyl palmitate which may be of animal origin and is on NIH Hazards list (National Institutes of Health, USA)
  • Cetyl alcohol which can cause hives and contact dermatitis
  • Dimethicone which is created from silica using the petrochemcial methanol, known to have caused tumours and mutations in laboratory animals
  • Methanol also known as methyl alcohol is on the Canadian chemical hotlist and can cause eczema, dermatitis, cardiovascular, liver, respiratory endocrine and neurotoxicity, teratogen (developmental toxicity : adverse effects on developing foetus.

So, do the benefits of one or two natural ingredients, even if they are certified organic, overcome the yucky ingredients mentioned above? You choose.

I know I choose the Integrity Cosmetics Certified Organic moisturizer with certification from the ACO (Australian Certified Organic) over a product containing the ingredients above. It’s simply better for my health and well being and I know no nasty chemicals will end up polluting our precious water ways and wildlife as a result of the production of Integrity products.

Thanks Karen Driscoll for your recipe contribution via Face Book.

This cake is dairy free and egg free and can be nut free if you use soy milk instead of almond milk. Link to blog entry for recipe where the following appears – to be created by Nick Davies

Ingredients:

1 Cup milk substitute (I use almond milk that I make in the blender – we don’t strain it so the whole almond ends up in the cake)

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

¾ cup granulated sugar (you can use substitute agave syrup here just add a little extra flour)

1/3 cup coconut or vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup plain flour

1/3 cup cacao powder

¾ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

Method:

Preheat oven to 180 C

Whisk together the soy milk and vinegar in a jug or bowl and let it sit for about 5 minutes so it curdles. Mix in the sugar, oil, vanilla and mix.

Sift together flour, cacao powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a separate bowl Add wet ingredients gradually and stir well until well combined.

Pour the batter into a 20cm cake tin lined with baking paper and bake for approximately half an hour or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean.

Top with your choice of melted chocolate for an amazing delicious treat!

Organic Skincare - My Biggest Business Blunder Ever!

Following your dream and starting your own business to have your vision fulfilled in the world is no mean feat and yet it’s very exciting at the same time. I embarked on this journey after spending over 8 months taking a sabbatical and looking for the perfect job for me. What was next? I couldn’t find the perfect job. I was looking for the right job in the right organization where I could make the kind of difference I want to make to the environment, people’s health & well being and philanthropy, with an underlying priority placed on “sustainability”.

Any potential jobs I found either they weren’t for me or I wasn’t what they were looking for. Either I didn’t have the relevant experience they wanted, or the role was too junior or too senior for where I was at. So my search continued for many months. During that time I became very clear that my career from here on was going to be about making the biggest difference I can on this planet and that I want to leave a legacy for future generations in the process.

Creating a certified organic range of skin care, Integrity Cosmetics, ticked all the boxes for me, so I started writing my business plan and taking actions to fulfill on my dream. It was an area I had been passionate about and researched as a woman for over 6 years, so that was a good start.

As any person starting their own business knows, there are lots of decisions to make. What will we call the company? What name that we like isn’t already taken? How do we apply for the company name? How do we protect the brand? Setting up a company entity, which products will be in the range, which ingredients will be in the products, etc etc you get the picture.
After a relatively smooth launch in record breaking time (that story is in a chapter I’ve written which is being published later this year, so stay tuned) Less than 12 months after launching I discovered that I had made the biggest business blunder of my entire career! And at the age of 40, that’s saying something.

The Best Before Date on our products was “one of” those contentious decisions and while the products could have had an 18 month Best Before Date stamp at the point of production we went with a 12 month date stamp. The dilemma is that date is fast approaching and (to my surprise and naivety) less than 3 months left on the Best Before Date has people asking questions.
The truth is that from my experience our products are actually good for another 6 months after opening but, to err on the side of caution, we tell customers 3+ months just to be sure. Given we can’t control how well the product is taken care of once it is handed over to the customer, we like to be a tad cautious.

My biggest business blunder has left Integrity Cosmetics with hundreds of products which have 5-10 weeks left according to the Best Before Date and another 3+ months after being opened, assuming they are used straight away and not put on a shelf unopened for 6 months after purchase.

So what do we do now? Not make the same mistake again – ok that’s an obvious one! The only solution I can think of is to have a Massive Clearance Sale. Never to be repeated again, because I won’t make the same mistake again, taking 70% off every Integrity Cosmetics product until sold out. At first this was a heart breaking realization for me and on the one hand I understand that it is the only option we have.
If you aren’t an Integrity Cosmetics customer yet, now is the perfect time to become one. If you would like to try our Australian Made, Certified Organic, Premium Skin Care range now, because you will never see prices like this again (I’ve learnt my lesson this time!) simply go to our website to order www.integritycosmetics.com.au

FYI our products are not tested on animals, so they are Cruelty Free, and they don’t contain any parabens, petrochemicals or harmful chemicals. Integrity Cosmetics products are certified with the ACO and every skin care product in our range contains 95-100% certified organic ingredients, being one of the highest standards in the world.

Our products are great for people with skin issues such as eczema, dermatitis, acne, dry skin and sensitive skin. And we even have men using our range (yes some men like to take care of their skin too without using petrochemical based products) Every sale contributes to philanthropy making this “a more beautiful world”, see our website for more details www.integritycosmetics.com.au
So help me get over my biggest business blunder yet and in the process you get the best bargain in town, and get to make a difference to the environment, your own well being and philanthropy at the same time. You don’t get much better than that!

Girls, for those of you already using our products, you can have a field day topping up your range and trying new products you haven’t purchased yet. Simply order through your consultant or online via our website. www.integritycosmetics.com.au After all 70% off is a terrific deal!

Organic Skin Care which Protects You from the Weather

“There are some natural sunscreen products on the market and from my experience, they are heavy and greasy and I wouldn’t use them underneath make up or on an every day basis on my face” says Tracey Thomson, Founder & CEO of Integrity Cosmetics. Finding the right product for your face during summer can be tough when you’re looking for a certified organic moisturizer with sun protection. Too much oil in a sunscreen will clog fine pores, leading to pimples and blackheads. You must be careful to cleanse well and exfoliate regularly particularly during the summer months.

This creates a dilemma for the average woman who wants to have an organic beauty regime. So how do you create an organic skincare product which contains 95% or more certified organic contents that also has some sun protection? To start with all of the Integrity Cosmetics moisturisers are certified organic, with the ACO, which uses one of the highest standards in the world where products must have 95-100% certified organic ingredients, so that gives us a head start on most products out there.

Our Protecting Moisturiser contains gorgeous ingredients such as neroli extract, kelp extract, aloe vera aqueous extract, green tea extract, chamomile extract, calendula extract, nettle extract, beeswax, shea nut butter, honey and olive oil to name a few, all of which are certified organic. Then we use a little zinc oxide to provide you with some protection from the sun.

The zinc oxide is not certified organic, much like water can not be deemed certified organic. Zinc is from the earth, as water is from nature, so it is naturally occurring, however zinc is not grown from the earth like the typical ingredients in our products which are derived from plants, flowers and herbs, so it cannot be deemed certified organic as it is extracted from the earth. Zinc which is a naturally occurring mineral is our solution to sun protection in the Protecting Moisturiser.

Of course there is also the added option of covering up, wearing a hat, sunglasses, a long sleeve summer top or scarf. Your sense of fashion need not be impacted either with many and varied trendy and gorgeous hats available. You could even opt for making your own! Even though you may choose to cover up more, and you can do this with a sense of fashion and style, it’s still a good idea to use a moisturiser which gives you some protection from the elements, given the weather is somewhat difficult to avoid.

The Greenest of Green Smoothies

There is nothing better than some green energy to start the day and get your insides feeling happy!

1 handful of baby spinach leaves (This can be any greens - spinach, kale, endive, mixed lettuce, greens powder)

1/3 of a long cucumber

1/2 a stick of celery

1/2 an avodaco

1 small handful of mint leaves

1 grapefruit

Top up with filter water or fresh coconut water to acheive desired consistency, blend, inhale!

If you’re running short on fresh greens, you can add some liquid or powder chlorophyll to give you a green energy boost that your skin will love too!

For a first time green smoothier, adding a bit of fruit helps it taste a little sweeter and go down a lot easier during a transition phase.

Try:

1 Banana (or 1 handful of berries)

1 handful of spinach leaves (or the afore mentioned greens)

1/3 of a long cucumber

Again, topped with filtered water or coconut water.

Or, as a simple green drink to carry around during the day I mix about 10 mL of Chlorophyll and a squeeze of half a lemon with about 600+ mLs of water.

Tracey’s Top 10 Tips For Staying Beautiful Whilst Travelling This Festive Season

Ever been on a long haul flight and got to your destination to find that you feel 10 years older and like death warmed up and your face feels like a dried up sultana. Can you relate to this? Hopefully not, but if you can and you’re travelling this festive seasonconsider these natural beauty travelling tips to stay beautiful and take care of your skin this festive season.

Natural Beauty Tips:

#1 Drink plenty of water in the week leading up to your trip. Yes that’s right! Often we get really busy before we’re going away and we forget to drink water, so we’re already dehydrated before we leave. Remember 33 x your weight in kilograms/1000 is the amount of water you should drink on a daily basis for optimal skin health.

#2 On your trip continue to drink plenty of water. I increase my daily intake of water by around 250mls when I’m flying, due to the constant air conditioning in airports and on flights which will dehydrate your body and of course your skin.

#3 Take your own empty flask with you on the plane. Due to security restrictions you can’t take a bottle of water through security and onto your flight. However you can ask the flight attendant to fill your empty bottle/flask rather than trying to survive on the tiny 200ml cups of water provided every so often (probably only 4 times on a long haul flight, which is much less than most people’s daily water intake) I’ve found the attendants to be most helpful in filling up a 750ml empty bottle with water. After all it saves them coming back to fill my cup up and being buzzed every 30 minutes for assistance

#4 If you’re concerned about having to visit the bathroom frequently book an aisle seat in advance, or if you’re travelling as a couple or family group ensure at least one person in your party gets an aisle seat. Better to ask them to move when you’re needing to go, than a complete stranger (although I’ve found most complete strangers are more than obliging)

You’ve probably heard this one before and may not like it if you’re a coffee lover. But Natural Beauty Tip #5 is not to drink alcohol or coffee while you’re travelling. Each glass of alcohol or coffee requires another glass of water to make up for the dehydration it causes, so unless you’re happy to be going to the bathroom every hour, I would skip these two beverages.

#6 Take hydrating foods on the plane with you. We’re often served pretzels and dry biscuits on planes, which don’t do anything to increase our hydration, so take some foods such as fruit, for example apples, bananas, mandarins, grapes and vegetables like carrot, celery, cucumber and tomato. You can cut these and pack them in a non spill container so that you don’t have to deal with washing, pealing, de-coring or ending up with squashed fruit in your hand luggage! If you’re travelling internationally, anything you don’t eat on the flight must of course be left on the plane or in the bins as you disembark before going through customs and immigration.

# 7 Now this one is really important! Don’t wear make up on the flight. I know for some people this is unheard of, but I say Love your face, as natural as it is and choose to have a make up free day. If you can’t do that, then wear make up onto the flight and then cleanse and moisturize your face during long haul flights. If you’re really desperate, a little mascara and lipstick is fine, but give the foundation a big miss if you don’t want sultana like skin upon your arrival. This tip is non negotiable and you won’t regret it.

Tip # 8 Use your day moisturizer, in fact I would recommend using Integrity Cosmetics Protecting Moisturizer as it will provide your face with additional protection while dealing with the elements such as lighting and air conditioning.

Natural Beauty Tip # 9
Follow the same skincare regime that you would if you were at home. That means, before you sleep wash your face and apply the Integrity Cosmetics organic Rejuvenating Serum, just like you would if you were at home. Your face will love you for it and will enjoy the extra moisture boost.

Tip # 10 Before you have breakfast or when you wake up from sleeping (assuming you do get a few winks) wash your face again and apply your daily moisturizer. Again the Protecting Moisturizer is a good choice and limits the number of products you need to take on the plane with you. Of course Integrity Cosmetics skincare products are all the size that is allowable on flights, so you’re fine when it comes to to security checks and taking your product onto your flight. You might also like to take a face cloth of your own, perhaps something disposable (although normally I wouldn’t recommend this) given you’re travelling.

Natural Cosmetics

...keep your skin care active!

Natural cosmetics contain ‘active’ natural ingredients which are beneficial to the skin. The higher the percentage of active ingredients present, the more your skin will benefit.

This month find out what defines natural cosmetics as ‘natural’ - and why sometimes, this can often be misleading.

Natural Cosmetics - is your skin care ‘active’?

The natural ingredients found in natural cosmetics, are considered ‘active ingredients’. Also called ‘performance’ ingredients, they cause physical changes in the skin and have the ability to alter the appearance of the skin. The reason they are so desirable is that they can stimulate cellular activity, or make a worthwhile contribution to your skin’s wellbeing. Qualities such as nourishing, rejuvenating, softening, bonding and hydrating - are all prime examples of the benefits of active natural ingredients. Non-active ingredients on the other hand, do not produce these benefits.

What are considered natural cosmetics?

In Australia if skin care products contain only 1% natural ingredients they can be called ‘natural’ cosmetics. That means, they may hold up to 99% petrochemical or other non-natural ingredients - and yet still have a ‘natural’ label placed on them.

You’d be surprised at some of the common ‘natural cosmetics’ available and the tiny proportions of active natural ingredients they actually contain.

For instance ‘natural’ skin care products found in pharmacies contain on average, a meagre 2-4% active ingredients. ‘Natural’ cosmetics found in department stores generally average just 3-8% active ingredients. And even professional ‘natural’ skin care ranges - on average, only deliver between 4-24% active ingredient content.

There are however natural cosmetics available (such as those found in the Integrity Cosmetics organic skin care range) which contain an astounding 95% - 100% active ingredients.

Given the amazing benefits that active natural ingredients have over non active ones, it makes sense to invest your skin’s health in natural cosmetics products - that have a high ratio of active ingredients present.

...And that’s only got to be a good thing, for keeping truly natural and healthy skin.

Natural Cosmetics – commonly found active ingredients:

Anti-oxidants: These anti-ageing substances come in the form of Vitamins A, C, E, trace elements (zinc, selenium and silicon), plant sources (green tea and grape seed) and algae. They enable the skin to fight free radicals, improve the skin’s contours and repair damage caused by pollution. Creams with an anti-oxidant base are generally recommended for thick or thin skin.

AHAs: These acids are present in citrus fruits, grapes and sugar cane. They have an exfoliating power that eliminates dead cells in the epidermis and smoothes out lines to restore the skin’s glow. They should be used on thick or sun-damaged skin, but should be avoided if your skin is very sensitive to the sun.

Natural Cosmetics and Organic Skin Care
